I
Joined Dunlop Ltd. .in. 1947 in the Tyre Compounding Laboratory as a physical
tester. Later I became a Compounder engaged in developing new rubber compounds
for all aspects of tyres and inner tubes.
To
widen my experience I was transferred to the Tyre
Examination Laboratory in
about 1960.
1 was later appointed Acting Manager when the Manager was sent overseas for
18 months. During my time in the Tyre Examination Laboratory I was responsible,
with the Manager, for setting up the X-ray Department which became our
responsibility.
I
acted as Deputy Manager in the Tyre Textiles Laboratory for about a year before
being appointed in 1964 to take over the Technical Service Section. This was a
small department of five experienced tyre examiners whose function it was to
examine returned tyres and, on the basis of any problems encountered, to alert
the Management of Tyre Technical Division about possible future service defects.
Shortly
after taking over the Technical Service Section I became Dunlop's expert witness
upon the retirement of the previous job holder. In fulfilling this function I
gave evidence in many courts in U.K. and overseas.
Around
1967 I took over the Management of the Tyre Examination Laboratory and X-ray
Departments again when the Manager retired but I retained the Technical Service
Section. I was given the new title Coordinator Tyre Examination Services
because, it was felt, this more adequately described my new function.
About
this time Dunlop was asked by the Home Office to undertake the training of their
Forensic Scientists in tyre examination techniques. I organized and ran these
courses for several yeas.
Earlier
I had realized that there had been little or no objective research into the
relationship between tyres and accidents and a great deal was taken on trust. I
put in hand a number of investigations and experiments which resulted in a
number of published papers. Mary of these were published in the Journal of the
Forensic Science Society of which I am a member.
I
left Dunlop Ltd. In 1980 and became an independent Pneumatic Tyre Consultant. In
1982 I was approached by the Institute of Police Traffic Management attached to
North Florida University to address a seminar on "Special Problems in
Accident Reconstruction". As a result of this I was later asked to join
their staff Adjunct Facility and to devise and lecture to specialized courses on
tyre and accident involvement. These have been held regularly ever since at
various locations in the U.S.A.
I.P.T.M.
also asked me to write a definitive text book on tyre failures. This was
published by them in Spring 1987 with the title "An Investigator's Guide to
Tire Failures".
